"Pål Hollender acts out to create accomplices. What he has to say, it seems, can't be communicated except by shared hard knock experience. Seeing his performances or video work, the beholder is challenged by the logic of the child that has been violently betrayed: "How far can I go before you, too, let down my confidence and turn your back on me?"

Hollender's work guarantees that there are no pure symmetries or uninfected relations. This is the sheer redundancy of trauma: It delivers itself in all dimensions of your life, at all levels of reality." Lars Bang Larsen, Art&Text

Pål Hollender makes work which is permeated with discomfort and pain, both physical and mental. Most of his videos are autobiographical. They push the boundaries of what he could, as the performer, possibly endure and you as the viewer can stand watching. Maria Lind, Curator
